Three people have died and one remains in a critical condition following a tragic accident involving two vehicles, one of which is a fuel tanker on the N3 between Estcourt and the Tugela River.
The N3 Toll Concession says the entire northbound carriageway towards Johannesburg is currently closed to traffic.
This accident comes as authorities continue to warn motorists against reckless and negligent driving during the holiday season, with many road safety campaigns taking place on major routes.
The crash also comes after the N3 Toll Concession revealed that single-vehicle crashes continue to dominate accident stats on the busy N3 route as millions travel this festive season.
Road users are urged to approach the area with extreme caution and to strictly follow all safety instructions issued by officials from the road incident management systems (RIMS), who are at the scene.
The severity of the crash and the risks associated with the highly flammable cargo, require even more stringent control on scene than usual.
As a result, extensive delays and significant congestion are to be expected in the area. N3TC requests patience and understanding from all road users while the recovery and cleanup operations are carried out.
