Science Communication & Advocacy Internship 2026 – Grain SA
The Grain SA Group of Entities is inviting suitably qualified and motivated graduates to apply for the Science Communication & Advocacy Intern position. This 12-month fixed-term internship is ideal for science graduates who are passionate about agriculture, sustainability, and food security, and who want to translate complex scientific information into clear, engaging, and credible content.
This opportunity offers hands-on exposure across the grain value chain, working closely with communication, research, farmer development, and policy teams to support evidence-based advocacy within the grain sector.

Purpose of the Internship
The purpose of this internship is to equip a science graduate with practical skills to translate research and on-farm realities into compelling stories and advocacy material. The intern will help communicate key issues such as:
- Climate resilience
- Soil health and conservation agriculture
- Plant protection and biotechnology
- Markets, food security, and sustainability
The role bridges what happens in the fields and silos with what is discussed in media, community forums, and Parliament.
Main Areas of Responsibility
Science-Based Communication & Storytelling
- Translate technical and scientific information into accessible articles and explainers
- Draft newsletters, website content, fact sheets, and member communications
- Assist with press releases, opinion pieces, and media briefs
- Conduct interviews with farmers, researchers, and experts
Evidence-Based Advocacy Support
- Convert research and statistics into:
- Policy briefs
- Infographics and slide decks
- Talking points for engagements and presentations
- Support myth-busting on misunderstood agricultural topics
- Assist with submissions and background documents for government and media engagements
Digital, Multimedia & Online Platforms
- Support content creation and scheduling for social media platforms
- Assist with short videos, animations, and basic data visualisations
- Update and manage content on Grain SA’s WordPress websites
- Assist with analytics and reporting on engagement
Events, Field Engagement & Campaigns
- Support communication coverage at major events such as:
- NAMPO
- Grain SA Congress
- NAMPO Cape and NAMPO ALFA
- Capture content through photography, interviews, video clips, and live updates
- Contribute to campaigns highlighting grain farmers’ contribution to the economy
Brand, Media & Stakeholder Support
- Support consistent messaging and visual identity
- Monitor media coverage and identify risks and opportunities
- Maintain media and stakeholder contact lists
- Assist with coordinating interviews, media visits, and farm visits
What You Will Learn

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree (BSc or equivalent) in one of the following or related fields:
- Agricultural Sciences (Agronomy, Plant Production, Soil Science, Agricultural Economics)
- Environmental Science / Ecology
- Food Science
- Engineering
- Biological or Life Sciences
Skills & Competencies
- Strong writing and communication ability
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
- Willingness to learn digital tools (e.g. Canva, basic video editing)
- Excellent communication skills in English and Afrikaans (additional languages are an advantage)
Advantageous (Not Required)
- Experience in student media or science communication
- Familiarity with WordPress or content management systems
- Prior exposure to farming or the grain industry
Personal Attributes
- Strong scientific literacy and attention to accuracy
- Ability to simplify complex information clearly
- Interest in sustainability, policy, and rural development
- Creative mindset with strong organisational skills
- Willingness to travel and work occasional overtime during key events
