  • Eight motorists have been arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe traffic officers since the start of the festive season.
  • The RTMC has praised officers for adopting a zero-tolerance approach to corruption on the roads.
  • Authorities say refusing bribes plays a key role in reducing crashes and saving lives during peak travel periods.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has renewed its call on traffic officers to reject bribery and corruption during the busy festive season travel period.

This follows the arrest of eight motorists who allegedly attempted to bribe traffic officers at the start of the festive season road safety campaign earlier this month.

The RTMC has welcomed the arrests, praising traffic officers for demonstrating courage and professionalism in enforcing the law without fear or favour.

The Corporation described the zero-tolerance approach as a “new and refreshing attitude” that reflects a firm commitment to cleaning up the image of traffic law enforcement.

According to the RTMC, two arrests were made in the Western Cape, three in the Eastern Cape and three in Gauteng since 1 December 2025.

The festive season in South Africa is traditionally marked by an increase in road crashes, often linked to unroadworthy vehicles and negligent driving.

The RTMC believes that a strict stance against bribery will contribute to safer roads and help reduce accidents and fatalities.
