Yellow Level 2 weather warning: Thunderstorms to lash Gauteng

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours expected on Tuesday across several provinces, including Gauteng and the North West.

The storms are expected to bring:

  • Excessive lightning
  • Large amounts of small hail
  • Strong, damaging winds

Affected areas include:

  • South-western North West
  • Eastern and northern Free State
  • Gauteng
  • KwaZulu-Natal
  • The Mpumalanga Highveld and escarpment
  • South-western Limpopo

Extreme Heat and Fire Danger in Western Regions

While central and eastern provinces brace for storms, the Northern Cape, western Free State, West Coast district, and Beaufort West in the Western Cape are experiencing another intense heatwave.

SARS has issued an extremely high fire danger warning for these regions, urging residents and farmers to exercise caution.

Outlook for Wednesday and Thursday

SAWS forecasts:

  • Partly cloudy to cool conditions across parts of the country
  • Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers over central and eastern regions
  • Hot weather persisting over the western parts of South Africa

Residents are urged to remain alert for sudden weather changes, especially in storm-prone and high-fire-risk areas.
