Nu Metro is expanding its footprint in South Africa once again as it continues taking over former Ster-Kinekor cinema sites.
And its latest move brings big-screen entertainment back to one of Cape Town’s most popular malls.
The cinema chain will officially open its new Cineplex at Cavendish Square on Monday, 15 December 2025, restoring a movie theatre experience to the Claremont centre after a six-month gap.
Nu Metro comes to Cavendish
Ster-Kinekor previously operated the Cavendish cinema but closed its doors on 12 June 2025 after its lease was not renewed.
Nu Metro has since taken over several of Ster-Kinekor’s former locations, including Gateway in Umhlanga as well as Bedford Square, and Cavendish is now the latest addition to its growing national presence.
According to Mybroadband, the cinema group promised that Nu Metro Cavendish Square would be redefining the rules of movie magic, hinting that the site may receive the same premium treatment showcased at its flagship Gateway complex.
The newly launched Nu Metro Gateway features South Africa’s first-ever 270-degree ScreenX auditorium, upgraded theatres, VIP Premiere Cinemas, 4DX, Scene Xtreme, and a Kidz Cinema.
Its flagship VIP offering includes reclining leather chairs, a curated menu, a full-service bar, and an exclusive lounge, the company’s most luxurious cinema experience yet.
Ster-Kinekor, meanwhile, has been downsizing select locations while investing in upgrades at its remaining cinemas. Its Cavendish closure followed earlier shutdowns at Gateway and Bedford Square.
