Killed for Lamborghinis: DA billboard takes aim at Tembisa Hospital corruption syndicates

The DA in Gauteng has launched a billboard slamming the corruption that cost the Tembisa Hospital over R2 billion.

The party said the billboard in the south of Joburg reinforces its call for criminal charges against syndicates implicated in the scandal. It reads: “Tembisa Hospital victims died for Lamborghinis”, and asks the public to support the party’s campaign.

In October, law enforcement officials obtained a court order authorising the search and seizure of assets from the Sandton home of controversial businessman, Hangwani Maumela, who is President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew from a previous marriage.

PARTY CALLS FOR URGENT ARRESTS

They seized high-end art pieces and several Lamboghinis. The raid formed part of efforts to trace about R820 million linked to large-scale corruption and tender fraud at the hospital.

Investigators said Maumela allegedly used a network of supplier companies to divert public funds into inflated private contracts. The DA has called for urgent arrests, saying the luxury cars seized from Maumela’s home are enough evidence of theft.

“The DA believes there is no need to wait until the conclusion of the SIU investigation to lay criminal charges. The evidence used for the asset forfeiture of property and a fleet of designer cars worth R208 million from Mr Hangwani Maumela should be used to arrest him soon,” the party said.

The party said arrests in the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal would help secure justice for murdered whistleblower Babita Deokaran. It added that recovered funds should be returned to the health department to improve conditions at the hospital.

“The DA will not stop our campaign until all those who stole from the poorest and most vulnerable hospital patients are criminally charged and appear in court. The sale of seized assets should be expedited and the money returned to the Gauteng Health Department to improve hospital conditions,” it said.
