For the first time in ten years, the spirit of Christmas is coming to Mitchells Plain at the flick of a switch.
Indeed, the Capetonian suburb is kicking off the festive season tonight with its own festive lights switch-on event.

MITCHELLS PLAIN FESTIVE LIGHTS SWITCH-ON: ALL THE DETAILS
Following the annual festive switch-on in Cape Town’s CBD, it’s Mitchells Plain’s turn to light up, just 20 days before Christmas Day arrives.
The celebration will take place this evening, Friday 5 December 2025. It is scheduled to start at 16:00 and end at 21:00.
The venue is Morgenster Road, in front of Westridge Garden. Entry is free to everyone from the community and beyond.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis will kick off the proceedings, lighting the streets of Mitchells Plain to officially mark the most wonderful time of the year.
In addition to the light showcase, there will be plenty of food stalls on-site that will satisfy your taste buds.
Plus, you can enjoy top-notch music and entertainment performances, courtesy of Wayne McKay, Ricky Vanni Frontline, Vortex Dance Crew, Jodi Jantjies, DJ Chello, Young OG CPT and much more.
A TWO-FOLD CELEBRATION FOR MITCHELLS PLAIN
Tonight’s festive occasion is special, in that it’s been ten years since it was held in Mitchells Plain.
What’s more, it just about coincides with the suburb’s upcoming 50th anniversary.
“This festival is a vital celebration of community, identity, and the vibrant cultural spirit that defines Mitchells Plain,” Ricardo Mackenzie, Western Cape MEC for Arts and Culture, told IOL.
“As we look ahead to 2026, we are actively planning culturally aligned programmes that will deepen this spirit and broaden opportunities for local talent, entrepreneurs and families. Bringing the festival back is an important step toward that future.”
We love to see it – and we’re sure you do, too! Let us know in the comments below if you’re planning to join the festivities in Mitchells Plain tonight.
