The City of Cape Town says visitors will still enjoy good access to the Muizenberg beachfront this festive season, even as major upgrade work continues.
The project, underway since February 2025, includes replacing the old seawall and preparing for large-scale improvements to public amenities in the new year.
Deputy Mayor Alderman Eddie Andrews confirmed that construction will pause from 19 December 2025 to 12 January 2026, ensuring smoother holiday access.
Festive season plans for Muizenberg Beach
To ensure a smooth experience for holidaymakers, the City has put the following temporary measures in place at Muizenberg Beach over the December period:
- Temporary access to the St James Walkway via the western parking area (unpaved, not yet wheelchair-friendly).
- Limited western parking on gravel will be open to the public.
- Beach, promenade, bathing boxes, ablutions, showers and NGO buildings remain open.
- Construction zones will stay fenced off for safety, but surfing remains unaffected.
- The upgraded eastern parking area is fully open, and temporary ablutions will operate during the builders’ break.
Crews are currently installing large precast sections of the new promenade and stepped revetment, with this work continuing until 19 December.
“We are excited to welcome visitors to Muizenberg this festive season. Best is to come early on the busy beach days, and to be patient as traffic flow to and from the beachfront will be slow during the peak periods. Please adhere to the signage, and stay clear of the fenced off areas, but most importantly, be safe and enjoy yourselves,” Alderman Andrews said.
