  • The inquiry has adjourned Mkhwanazi’s testimony to next year.
  • He admitted to facilitating a deal with Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala and receiving payments from him.
  • The adjournment came just as evidence leaders were moving to questions about the alleged Brakpan murder cover-up.

The testimony of suspended Ekurhuleni corruption-accused cop Julius Mkhwanazi has been adjourned to next year at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Mkhwanazi was testifying for the second day about his role in facilitating a deal between the EMPD and Vusimuzi Cat Matlala in 2022.

This is where Mkhwanazi indeed admitted to facilitating an agreement involving Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala after initially denying it.

He further told the commissioners that he received more than R70 000 in different payments from alleged underworld figure Matlala.

His testimony was adjourned just as evidence leaders were approaching the separate matter of an alleged cover-up of the death of a suspect in Brakpan in 2022.

A previous witness had testified that Mkhwanazi ordered him to dump the body of a suspected thief who’d been tortured and killed during an operation.

After a long-winded explanation of how he went to the scene, Mkhwanazi testified he left within five minutes.

“No members of EMPD or SAPS or any security company has ever came and concluded that we killed a person or there was an incident where a person died and I didn’t even confirm with the members that were there,” said Mkhwanazi.

Minister Senzo Mchunu is now on the stand for his separate testimony about the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
