  • Suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi admitted he facilitated an agreement involving Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala after initially denying it.
  • He also confirmed receiving more than R70 000 from Matlala, whom he described as a brother.
  • The Commission continues probing political and criminal interference within the justice system.

The suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has now admitted that he indeed facilitated an agreement between the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and Vusi Cat Matlala.

This comes after Mkhwanazi tried to deny everything at the Madlanga Commission on Wednesday, during his first testimony.

He’s wrapping up his testimony on allegations that he’s one of the Metro Police senior officers who led to the rot within the EMPD over the past few years.

Mkhwanazi is also being probed about documents linked to an agreement for Matlala to donate vehicles to the EMPD, in exchange for Matlala’s cars to be registered under the Municipality and be fitted with blue lights.

While Mkhwanazi initially took issue with the word “facilitation”, he conceded to the fact after a back-and-forth with Commissioners.

One of the Commissioners said:

“Whatever language that is used, whether it’s facilitation or assistance, this is what you did.”

Mkhwanazi responded by saying:

“Yes, facilitation, yes. I can’t agree to leave my kids and go to jail for something that I did not do. I didn’t put blue lights.”

Mkhwanazi has also admitted to receiving payments from Vusimuzi Matlala, likening the suspected criminal to a blood brother to him.

He confirmed that he received more than R70 000 in separate payments from Matlala in 2022.

“I had many challenges, you see. We discussed many things with Vusi and he was assisting. He was like a brother to me.”

Meanwhile, the suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will also be continuing with his testimony at the Commission later on Thursday.

During his first day of testimony, Mchunu defended his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team, citing that his order was long overdue.

Proceedings into allegations of political and criminal interference within the criminal justice system continue in Pretoria.
