There has been an electrical plug failure incident at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
This was confirmed by the Gauteng Department of Health on Thursday morning. The Department further assured that no lives were lost during this incident.
“Immediate action was taken to ensure the safety of all nine patients on ventilators. The hospital management activated contingency measures and transferred all nine patients to another ward, which has a stable power supply,” the statement from the department read.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS), ICU nursing teams, clinical staff and logistics support played a critical role in safely facilitating these transfers.
The on-site electrician has assessed the electrical fault to determine the cause and reported that the issue is complex and requires additional backup.
A thorough investigation, including a review of CCTV footage, is being undertaken. Should anyone be found responsible, a case will be opened with law enforcement.
