What is the ACTOM Engineering Apprenticeship?
The Engineering Apprenticeship is aimed at unemployed youth who want to follow a technical career in engineering. Apprentices are trained in core workshop and maintenance skills, with exposure to different departments and tools.
Apprenticeship Fields
Apprentices will receive training in:
- Armature (Armature Winding–related tasks)
- Fitter & Turner
- Rotation to assigned departments
- Basic hand tools and workshop practices
You’ll be working under supervision while learning practical skills that are needed in the electrical and mechanical engineering industries.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the ACTOM Engineering Apprenticeship, you must meet the following:
- Grade 12 (Matric) completed
- Minimum 50% for Mathematics
- Ability to communicate well in written and spoken English
- Must be unemployed
- Willing to undergo company selection processes, which may include:
- Pre-enrolment medicals
- Criminal record and background verifications
- Psychometric assessments (if applicable)
Key Tasks & What You’ll Learn
As an ACTOM apprentice, your daily tasks and learning areas may include:
- Assisting qualified artisans with mechanical and electrical tasks
- Learning basic hand tool use safely and correctly
- Exposure to Armature work and rotating machinery
- Supporting Fitter & Turner operations such as fitting, assembling, and maintaining components
- Rotating through assigned departments to gain broader technical experience
- Following safety, health and quality procedures in the workshop
These tasks are designed to build your confidence, technical ability and readiness to progress towards a recognised trade.
Separate Opportunity: Engineering in Training (EIT)
In addition to the apprenticeship, ACTOM also offers an Engineering in Training (EIT) opportunity for university graduates.
EIT Requirements:
- Grade 12 completed
- BEng / BSc Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- Good written and verbal English
- Tasks include:
- Working towards ECSA professional registration
- Writing monthly progress reports, manuals and technical documents
- Testing, evaluating and modifying products
