The Eastern Cape is experiencing a blend of coastal rain, interior warmth, and developing thunderstorms as atmospheric instability persists across the province.
The South African Weather Service says the interplay between warm inland air and cooler coastal conditions will shape today’s forecast.
Fog and cloud cover start the day in the Eastern Cape
Interior towns began the morning under low visibility as fog patches formed before sunrise. Forecaster Phemelo Zonke confirmed the trend, “We saw early morning fog patches across parts of the interior, and these conditions lifted slowly into cloudy skies.”
Coastal regions, especially between Gqeberha and East London, will see light showers weather throughout the day.
Northern districts expect thunderstorms
The northern interior remains the hotspot for storm activity. Thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon, driven by warm temperatures and rising humidity.
Zonke said, “We expect showers and thundershowers over the extreme northern parts of the province, with coastal areas staying cooler throughout the day.”
Warm Interior Conditions Continue
Despite unsettled weather, the western interior will stay warm, reaching the mid-20s. The contrast between warm inland and cool coastal zones may enhance cloud build-up later in the afternoon.
Tomorrow, residents can expect a similar pattern, with coastal showers persisting and thunderstorms forming again in the north.
