Former SSA officials nabbed in R12 million fraud case

Authorities have arrested two former senior State Security Agency (SSA) officials for alleged fraud involving more than R12 million.

The pair, Patrick Mshothola and Thulani Dlomo, made their first court appearance in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on 1 December 2025.

ARRESTS SHAKE THE SSA FRAUD CASE

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption arrested the two former officials on 30 November 2025.

The arrest followed months of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of state funds.

The former SSA officials face charges of theft, fraud, forgery and uttering (using or presenting a forged document with the intent to defraud).

WHO ARE THE ACCUSED IN THE SSA OFFICIALS FRAUD CASE?

The duo once held key roles in the SSA’s operational structures.

Mshothola served as Acting Project Manager on various projects within the SSA’s Chief Directorate: Special Operations.

Dlomo held the position of Deputy Director: Counterintelligence within the agency.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the pair allegedly used their positions to unlawfully access funds intended for national security operations.

EX-SSA OFFICIALS RELEASED ON STRICT BAIL AS FRAUD CASE CONTINUES

The court has granted each accused bail for R20 000, under strict conditions.

The accused need to surrender their passports, avoid contact with witnesses and report to their local police stations every Friday.

The court also barred them from selling or transferring any immovable property, signalling the seriousness of the case.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IN THE EX-SSA OFFICIALS FRAUD CASE

The matter will return to court on 26 January 2026 for disclosure and to secure a possible high court date.

NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame says the case may set an important precedent for how corruption in high-risk sectors is handled.
