Woolworths has introduced a new shopping bag, just days after fraud-accused businessman Vusi “Cat” Matlala testified about using their old one to stash cash intended for bribing his associates.
The “tenderpreneur”, nicknamed – who is also charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder – called the item his “money bags.”
WOOLWORTHS INTRODUCES NEW SHOPPING BAG
On social media, Woolworths’ new shopping bags have become a hot topic.
In place of the thick black fabric bags, Woolies has introduced a white one instead.
The lighter colour appears visibly transparent, making it easier to spot the contents inside.
“Woolies said no more scandals”, posted TikToker @_quinnela_.
Another – @quanzah – shared: “Woolies said no money laundering on our watch”.

Last week, Vusi “Cat” Matlala testified that former Minister of Police Bheki Cele allegedly demanded a R1 million bribe in exchange for his assistance in a criminal activity.
The trendy-looking “tenderpreuneur” paid half the money, in two installments of R200 000 and R300 000, which he placed in a Woolworths shopping bag.
Woolies later made light of the mention with a cheeky X post.
The retailer tweeted: “Secures the groceries. A makeshift overnight bag. The national carrier. The multi-talented. Ladies and gentlemen… The right way to use the W bag”.
NO MORE PLASTIC
In 2022, Woolworths became the first South African retailer to remove single-use plastic shopping bags from all its stores.
This was part of the company’s vision for a zero-packaging waste to landfill.
