Parts of KwaZulu-Natal are experiencing severe weather as thunderstorms and hail lash the province.
Videos and photos of the adverse conditions have been circulating widely on social media.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple warnings, including a level five alert for Tuesday, 2 December.
AFFECTED AREAS
Areas impacted include Abaqulusi, Big Five Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, eDumbe, Jozini, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Nkandla, Nongoma, Ulundi, Umhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze, uMlalazi, and uPhongolo. Rainfall in excess of 50mm is expected in the north-eastern parts of KZN.
SAWS warns: “Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, with potential to cause flooding of roads and settlements, damaging winds, hail, and excessive lightning resulting in damage to mud-built houses, danger to life, and displacement of communities, are expected over the north-eastern parts of KZN today.”
Widespread showers and thundershowers may cause flooding, displacement of communities, and hazards such as fast-flowing rivers, mudslides, rockfalls, and soil erosion. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, as flooded roads and damaged bridges could lead to closures and traffic disruptions.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
SAWS advises residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas with potholes or sinkholes. People should avoid crossing swollen rivers and streams, and if trapped in floods, exit vehicles and move to higher ground. Residents are also encouraged to place valuables above expected flood levels.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, echoes these warnings, urging the public to follow safety guidelines, particularly regarding floodwaters and lightning risks.
