MyCiTi expansion creates 600 jobs – jobseekers urged to register NOW

Over the past two years, six MyCiTi infrastructure projects in the metro-south east have created nearly 600 temporary job opportunities.

These six key expansion projects have injected R38.1 million into the local economy, helping hundreds of Capetonians support their families.

Over the next three financial years, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is investing a further R5.4 billion to bring the MyCiTi service to residents in Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.

The goal is to connect communters from these areas to Wynberg and Claremont through safe, reliable and affordable public transport.

The City noted that this investment is just the beginning, with even more job opportunities on the way.

MyCiti creates 594 temporary jobs

According to the City’s Mayco Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, the MyCiti Expansion Project is the biggest investment in public transport by any metro in SA.

“You can see the progress from Lansdowne to Gugulethu, from Philippi to Mandalay and Ikhwezi, to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha,” he said.

“This investment goes way beyond the red bus lanes, stations, stops, walking and cycle lanes, and upgrades to intersections and roads.”

“It is an investment in people and communities, putting bread on the table for households across the metro-south east through temporary job opportunities for local jobseekers.”

Job opportunities were created across several construction sites, including:

  • Sky Circle, Lansdowne – 296 jobs
  • Heinz Road, Gugulethu – 100 jobs
  • Mandalay & Ikwezi – 83 jobs
  • AZ Berman Drive, Mitchells Plain – 56 jobs
  • Turfhall Road, Lansdowne – 36 jobs
  • Philippi – 23 jobs

Construction pauses for the builders’ break and resumes in January 2026, when more roles will become available.

“We provide on-the-job training as part of the opportunity to work on the sites,” Quintas added.

“I want to encourage residents to please register on the jobseeker’s database at your local subcouncil as this is the gateway to be considered for temporary work opportunities at projects happening in your ward.”

Looking for work? How to get onto the database

The City fills temporary construction jobs only through its official jobseeker database, which is used for Expanded Public Works Programme opportunities

This means anyone wanting to work on MyCiTi projects must register.

To sign up, visit your nearest subcouncil office with:

  • Your South African ID
  • Proof of address

How the process works:

Register or update your profile on the jobseeker database. When contractors need workers, the City randomly selects names from the database. Selected jobseekers receive an SMS and have 24 hours to accept.
