Severe thunderstorms to batter Gauteng

Gauteng is facing an intense spell of severe weather, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns of thunderstorms that intensified overnight and are expected to continue into today.

Forecaster Phemelo Zonke says the province will experience “severe thunderstorms possibly resulting in heavy downpours of rain, strong damaging winds and small hail,” particularly across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and the southern parts of Limpopo, as they move into Gauteng.

Zonke adds that lightning activity will be significant.

“Excessive lightning remains a real concern, especially during peak storm periods,” she explains.

Fog and reduced visibility are expected on Sunday morning in Gauteng

Early morning fog patches are expected over parts of the eastern provinces. Gauteng motorists are urged to exercise caution as visibility may drop below one kilometre in some areas.

SAWS says the fog will lift gradually as temperatures rise into the mid-20s, with Johannesburg expected to reach 26°C and Pretoria 29°C.

While much of the province will start partly cloudy, isolated to scattered showers will build through the afternoon. The eastern Free State, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga will also experience increased convective activity that may spill over into Gauteng.

Communities urged to prepare for possible damage

Emergency services warn that strong winds could damage roofs, uproot trees and disrupt travel. Zonke stresses the need for preparedness.

“These storms can intensify quickly, and residents should secure loose items and stay off the roads during peak activity,” she said.

As temperatures dropped overnight, Johannesburg’s minimum hovered around 13°C, while the surrounding areas remained slightly cooler.
