Johannesburg’s inner city has just made history with the launch of the city’s first full-size football field in almost 100 years.
Field for Dreams, next to the M2 highway in Selby, is about to become a landmark for the Joburg CBD regeneration movement. It will offer thousands of young people a safe and modern space to play and belong.
For many inner-city youngsters, this field may represent hope, dignity and a sense of possibility that once felt out of reach.
A catalyst for the Joburg CBD regeneration movement
Developed through a partnership between the Maharishi Invincibility Institute (MII), Standard Bank and Jozi My Jozi, the Field of Dreams marks a turning point in urban renewal in Johannesburg.
“This is more than just a football field. It is a solid investment in our youth and a symbol of pride restored to our city,” says MII CEO Dr Taddy Blecher.
The project comes at a time when urban improvement efforts are accelerating across Johannesburg. This includes upgrades to public spaces, including this major city interchange.
Collaboration driving real change
Jozi My Jozi, known for its hands-on approach to reclaiming public spaces, says the project demonstrates what is possible when communities stop waiting for government action and start rebuilding together.
“Our partnership with MII and Standard Bank on the Field of Dreams project is a perfect example of collaboration to bring sports and recreation for the benefit of the youth into the inner city,” says Jozi My Jozi CEO Bea Swanepoel.
Dr Blecher’s long-term Education Town vision aims to transform the surrounding precinct into a fully integrated learning district. This will include education facilities, community hubs and pathways into future careers. Gold and industry shaped the city, but it is changing.
“Today, we are digging deeper for something far more valuable: the genius, creativity, and infinite potential within our young people,” says Dr Blecher.
A powerful signal of Joburg’s revival
Standard Bank provided the land for the project.
“This field is not purely an investment in concrete,” says Nkosinathi Manzana, Executive Head: Group Real Estate at Standard Bank. “It is an investment in the spirit of community and the future of Johannesburg.”
With spectator stands, multi-sport courts and a clubhouse, they expect the Field of Dreams to attract league matches, family events and youth programmes, reshaping an area long associated with urban decay.
“Sport has always had the power to unify and uplift. The Field of Dreams is part of a broader movement to restore dignity and safe spaces for young people across our city,” explains former national cricket captain Dr Ali Bacher, who helped champion the initiative.
A city rebuilding itself, one project at a time
Piece by piece, the Joburg CBD regeneration movement is proving what is possible when residents, private partners and community groups take ownership of their shared spaces. If projects like this continue gathering momentum, Johannesburg’s inner city could once again become a place with pride.
