The Emalahleni Regional Court in Mpumalanga sentenced a Mpumalanga pastor and two of his family members for brutally assaulting, amputating, and kidnapping a young man.
The court sentenced Pastor Solomon Mahlangu and his son, Enock Mahlangu, to life imprisonment each for attempted murder and three years’ imprisonment each for kidnapping.
The court also sentenced Mahlangu’s daughter-in-law, Poppy Lethnes Mahlanga, to three years’ direct imprisonment for kidnapping.
SHORTCUT TURNED DEADLY
On 27 March 2024, the victim took a shortcut through the church premises on Kroomdraai Road towards Extension 16 in Vosman, when violence erupted.
Enock, the Mpumalanga pastor’s son, confronted the victim and accused him of stealing batteries and other items from the church.
They forced the victim into a bakkie and drove him to the bushes, where they chopped off his hands with a panga, leaving him for dead at the scene.
Fortunately, a passerby heard his cries and alerted authorities, ensuring he received medical attention.
POLICE ARREST MPUMALANGA PASTOR AND CO-ACCUSED
Following investigations, the police arrested the trio and later released them on strict bail.
During the trial, the accused pleaded not guilty and chose to remain silent.
Prosecutor Francois Brandt led he prosecuting team, presenting compelling evidence, including the victim’s testimony of the brutal attack.
The accused testified, but the court found their testimonies to be mere denials and rejected them as improbable.
NATIONAL PROSECUTING AUTHORITY WELCOMES THE SENTENCE
The NPA Regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the institution welcomes the sentences and remains committed to pursuing perpetrators of violent crimes.
She believes the sentences will deter other like-minded individuals from committing such crimes.
