Schengen Zone to welcome a new country in 2026

Europe’s Schengen Zone is set to grow again in 2026, and the next country in line is Cyprus.

Cyprus, known for its warm Mediterranean climate, bright beaches, rich archaeological sites and blend of Greek and Turkish influences, is expected to formally join Schengen next year.

Cyprus to be 30th Schengen member

The island nation has been part of the European Union for over two decades, yet, unlike most EU members, it remains outside the Schengen area.

But that is now changing. The country has secured the necessary political backing to join the zone next year.

The Schengen Zone currently includes 29 countries that have removed internal border and customs checks, creating a single travel area across most of Europe.

Alongside EU members, it also includes associated states like Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. In the last four years, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania were added, with Cyprus set to become the 30th member.

According to Travel Off Path, the island has now completed the technical groundwork required for accession.

This includes integrating fully with the EU’s Visa Information System, aligning its visa rules with the rest of the bloc, and installing the EU’s new Entry Exit System (EES) at airports and seaports.

For South African travellers, Schengen entry would simplify movement. Instead of navigating Cyprus’ current visa rules, travellers would follow standard Schengen requirements.

A valid Schengen visa would allow entry to Cyprus and onward travel through the zone without additional checks, making the island easier to pair with multi-destination Europe trips.
