- Vusi “Cat” Matlala is expected to testify before the Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday despite his lawyers requesting a postponement.
- They argue that poor conditions and consultation challenges inside C-Max Prison prevented adequate preparation.
- The committee insists the hearing will proceed at the prison, where Matlala faces serious allegations involving interference in the criminal justice system.
Controversial businessman Vusimuzi Cat Matlala will appear before the Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
This was confirmed by the Committee’s chair, Soviet Lekganyane, on Tuesday, following interjections from Matlala’s attorneys requesting more time for their client to prepare before he gives his testimony.
The Ad Hoc Committee confirmed on Sunday that Matlala will give his testimony from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison in Pretoria, where he’s currently awaiting trial for the alleged attempted murder of his influencer girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane.
However, on Tuesday afternoon, Matlala’s lawyers shocked the nation and claimed that their client is not ready, as he did not have enough time to prepare due to his living conditions behind bars.
His lawyer, Matlhatsi Abram Madira, said consulting with Matlala in prison has become “an absolute nightmare”.
He said that at times they experienced network difficulties in C-Max and that the infrastructure was not conducive for a productive consultation, as “there are no proper facilities”.
Madira said the building itself was not user-friendly for lengthy consultations and that they could not meet the Wednesday deadline.
Matlala is at the center of criminal allegations, including interfering with the criminal justice system and having police officials on his payroll.
