After a career riddled with injuries, a former Springbok and current Bulls flyhalf could be forced to retire from rugby.
Playmaker Johan Goosen is believed to be contemplating calling it quits as he battles yet another injury.
Goosen played for the Springboks for four years
A teenage prodigy in his younger days, Goosen has battled with injuries for the better part of his career. So talented, he made his Springbok debut at the age of 20, a lot was then expected from the former Cheetahs star. He showed his versatility with two starts in his preferred 10 position and a further six at full back. His career in the green and gold would only last for four years, however, as he left to play his rugby abroad.
After moving to France, Goosen played Top 14 side Racing 92, before an early retirement. He would infamously return to the game and to France when Montpellier bought him out of his exist deal. With Montpellier he would go on to win the EPCR Challenge before returning to South Africa to play for the Bulls.
May be forced to retire due to injuries
Since signing for the Bulls, Goosen has one Currie Cup title to show. He then lost out three times as United Rugby Championship finalist. Now according to SA Rugby Magazine, he is considering retiring at 33.
“According to Netwerk24, the Bulls’ decision to sign promising No 10 Kade Wolhuter on loan from the Lions and recall Handre Pollard from the Bok tour for Saturday’s Vodacom URC derby against the Lions are clear indications that Goosen’s time may finally be up. The 33-year-old is currently struggling with a calf injury and considering retirement.” Wrote the publication.
Bulls rope in Wolhuter on loan
On Monday the Bulls announced the loan signing of Kade Wolhuter from the Lions. That, in itself a risk as the former Stormers player has had an injury ravaged career thus far. It now remains to be seen if Goosen will make the official announcement.
