Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala says he is unable to appear before the Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday, claiming he has not had enough time to prepare.
Matlala is scheduled to testify before the committee at the Kgosi Mampuru C-Max prison, where he is currently detained for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane.
He is also implicated in multiple criminal investigations by both the Madlanga Commission and the Ad Hoc Committee, which were established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to probe alleged political interference and criminal infiltration within the criminal justice system.
ActionSA MP Dereleen James has dismissed Matlala’s claims as an attempt to obstruct the committee’s work, saying he has had more than enough time to prepare.
“No WhatsApp threats from Matlala’s lawyers demanding a 3 pm response by Parliament to their demands will deter us from doing our job.
The era of treating parliament with disrespect has come to an end,” said James.
James condemned what she described as intimidation tactics from Matlala’s legal team, insisting that Parliament will not be deterred. She added that the era of treating Parliament with disrespect is over.
