The Western Cape faces a day of intense heat across its western interior, with temperatures soaring into the 40s and high fire danger conditions prompting an official alert.
While coastal areas remain cool, inland towns may experience hazardous conditions linked to dry air and hot winds.
Clear skies dominate despite fire concerns
Forecaster Phemelo Zonke said the province will enjoy largely stable weather, but the fire dangers cannot be ignored.
“The Western Cape will be mostly clear, with very hot conditions over the western interior and high fire danger in some areas,” Zonke explained.
The South African Weather Service issued a warning about the potential for runaway veld fires due to strong, dry winds.
Southern coast remains cool
Along the southern coastal belt, temperatures will stay mild. Towns such as George and Mossel Bay will experience cool daytime highs under mostly clear skies.
Zonke added, “It will be a cool day along the southern coastal regions, despite extreme heat further inland.”
Interior temperatures exceed 40°C
Clanwilliam will peak at a scorching 40°C, while Vredendal reaches 41°C. These extreme temperatures increase the likelihood of veld fires spreading quickly. Residents are urged to avoid open flames and to report smoke immediately.
Although no thunderstorms are expected in the Western Cape today, the combination of heat and wind remains a serious hazard.
