Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx has secured one of the sport’s highest honours, being named the World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year on Saturday night.
Veteran Bok lock Victor Matfield was the man to announce Marx’s achievement, sparking jubilant celebrations in the Springbok changeroom as the front rower’s teammates mobbed him with cheers and embraces.

With the award, Marx has added his name to a short and prestigious list of South African greats. The announcement came shortly after the Boks’ 24-13 victory over Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.
Marx becomes only the fourth South African to lift the award, breaking new ground for the national side as the second Springbok in a row to claim the title. Last year, Pieter-Steph du Toit became the first SA player to win it twice, and he was again among this year’s nominees.
The 31-year-old hooker has been immense throughout the season – dominating at the set piece, disrupting breakdowns, and making his presence felt in open play. He earned the award ahead of fellow nominees Du Toit, Ox Nche, and teammates from across the rugby world. Marx had previously been shortlisted in 2018 and was crowned SA Rugby’s Player of the Year in 2017.
His inclusion in the elite company of past South African winners – Du Toit, Bryan Habana (2007) and Schalk Burger (2004) – underscores his consistency and influence in the green and gold jersey.
SA Rugby president Mark Alexander applauded Marx’s achievement, describing him as the embodiment of Springbok values. “His work ethic is extraordinary, and this recognition reflects everything he brings to the team – resilience, commitment and character,” he said.
Alexander also praised the other South African nominees, including Ethan Hooker, who featured in the Breakthrough Player of the Year category. He said the collective recognition highlights the depth and strength of the national squad under coach Rassie Erasmus.
South Africa’s proud record in the Men’s 15s Player of the Year race stretches back more than two decades, with previous nominees including Joe van Niekerk, Marius Joubert, Victor Matfield, Fourie du Preez, Frans Steyn, Eben Etzebeth, Willie le Roux, Duane Vermeulen, Faf de Klerk, Cheslin Kolbe and Lukhanyo Am.
