Ramaphosa pokes fun at Ireland’s loss to Springboks at G20

President Cyril Ramaphosa has jokingly teased Ireland’s Prime Minister about the country’s loss to the Springboks amid the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.

This comes as South Africa beat their rugby rivals 24-13 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin – their first victory since 2012.

RAMAPHOSA TEASES IRELAND PM AFTER SPRINGBOKS VICTORY

In a cheeky X post, President Cyril Ramaphosa took a break from the G20 Summit proceedings to brag about the Springboks’ victory.

The South African president revealed that he had received an Irish rugby jersey from Prime Minister Michael Martin.

He posted: “There’s the G20. And then there are the formidable rugby XVs of South Africa and Ireland.

“This evening, as we sat down to dinner at the end of day one of the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit, Taoiseach of Ireland @MichealMartinTD presented me with the thoughtful and special gift of an Ireland shirt signed by the Irish national team.

Ramaphosa jokingly added: “I assured my good friend that the strong bonds between our countries will withstand a Springbok victory in Dublin tonight”.

‘WE ARE THE WORLD CHAMPIONS’

It’s not the first time President Ramaphosa has bragged about the Springboks to world leaders.

During a visit to the White House in May, Ramaphosa – nicknamed “Cupcake” – beamed with pride as he spoke about the South African team.

During a bilateral meeting with Japanese delegates in August, the president emphasised South Africa’s record.

In one clip, Ramaphosa gifted a rugby shirt to an official, stating, “This is a token of remembrance from the Springboks”.

He added: “And you know, of course, we are the World Champions. Don’t forget that one. Four times”
