Weather across three provinces will be anything but predictable this weekend on Saturday, 22 November to Sunday, 23 November, as the Northern Cape, Mpumalanga and the Free State brace for extreme and contrasting conditions.
MPUMALANGA
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Mpumalanga, with heavy downpours, lightning, small hail and damaging winds possible over the escarpment. If you’re in the Lowveld, though, prepare for the heat.
MBOMBELA
Mbombela will be cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers, with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 27°C. Sunday will be partly cloudy and warmer, reaching a high of 30°C.
NORTHERN CAPE
It’s a very different picture up north. Scorching temperatures and extremely high fire danger conditions are expected across parts of the province. Fog patches may linger in the west, but otherwise conditions will be fine, hot to very hot, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers over the far north-east.
Along the coast, winds will start light to moderate north-westerly, becoming fresh south-westerly later.
KIMBERLEY
You may want to remain indoors and out of the sun over the weekend in Kimberly, which is the capital city. Saturday brings a low of 17 and a high of 37, and a 19 to 34 on Sunday.
UPINGTON
Even worse conditions are expected in Upington; you can expect fine conditions, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. A min of 19 and a blistering max of 40 on Saturday. Slightly cooler on Sunday, 20°C to 31°c.
FREE STATE
If you’re in the Free State, you’re in for some morning fog patches, but otherwise partly cloudy and warm. Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the western parts of the province.
BLOEMFONTEIN
The Free State’s capital city, Bloem, will be fine, becoming partly cloudy on Saturday afternoon, with a min of 16 and a max of 32. You can expect some rain on Sunday, with temperatures ranging from 16° to 33.
