A listener shared that when she met her husband, her stepdaughter was only two years old, and she has played a pivotal role in her life ever since.
Now, as her stepdaughter prepares to celebrate her sweet sixteen, she has discovered something that left her deeply hurt. The child’s biological mother has been speaking badly about her behind her back.
She is now torn between confronting her to understand what the issue might be or keeping her distance for the sake of peace. Reaching out to The Best T in the City with Tbose, Anonymous wants to know if there are any blind spots she may be overlooking.
“When I met my husband, my stepdaughter was only two, so l’ve been in her life from early on. Her mother and I always had a respectful, friendly relationship until my husband and I got married. Her behaviour shifted. She grew distant, less warm, less talkative. I didn’t make an issue out of it. I didn’t want to create tension, and I always told myself: As long as the child is happy, that’s what matters.
“Now that my stepdaughter is turning 16, while planning her party, I learned something that really hurt me. A mutual friend told me her mother has been speaking badly about me, saying I’m controlling, that I don’t let my husband co-parent properly, and that I “buy” the child’s affection.
“Uncle T, I was shocked. I’ve never disrespected her or tried to take her place. I’ve only ever tried to support the child and keep harmony. I told my husband about this, and he said I must handle it, as it’s my house after all. Now I’m torn: Do I confront her and ask why she’s saying these things? Do I keep quiet for the sake of peace and the birthday? And would I be wrong for even considering that she shouldn’t attend if she clearly has an issue with me? I just don’t know how to handle this without causing more damage.”
