  • Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo has returned as head of Crime Intelligence, despite being arrested in June on serious fraud and corruption charges related to manipulating police appointments.
  • The charges, brought by the IDAC, centre on Khumalo and six co-accused over the alleged misuse of intelligence funds and the controversial hiring of a civilian with no policing background.
  • During the ongoing Madlanga Commission, Khumalo gave explosive testimony alleging that criminal syndicates recruit “insiders” within the police and justice system to derail investigations and protect cartel leaders.

Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo has been reinstated as head of Crime Intelligence, effective Thursday morning, just months after his arrest on fraud and corruption charges.

Khumalo and six colleagues face allegations by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) of manipulating appointments, including the controversial hiring of 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele, who had no policing background.

Before the ongoing Madlanga Commission, Khumalo testified that the most serious threats to police operations come from within the SAPS and the justice system.

He alleged that criminal syndicates recruit serving police and prosecutors as “insiders” to leak information, derail dockets, and protect cartel leaders.

His reinstatement occurs while the criminal probe remains active.
