Every year, Time Out asks editors and experts around the world to search out the one street that reflects the soul of their city.
The global team judges each contender on food, drink, culture, fun and community spirit. The result is a list of 31 streets that do more than connect point A to point B. They tell a story.
This year, South Africa’s standout is clear. Kloof Street in Cape Town earns its spot at number 22 by blending history, creativity and everyday life into one electric strip. Walking its length feels like taking a quick tour of the city, complete with flavour, style and personality.
A street that feels like a mini Cape Town
Kloof Street sits between the bustle of the city bowl and the leafy calm of Tamboerskloof. Table Mountain towers above it, but the real show is at eye level. Old Victorian buildings open into modern restaurants. Indie shops trade next door to long-standing locals. It is the sweet spot where heritage and new ideas coexist without trying too hard.
The street has the easy charm of a neighbourhood, but the creativity of a small city. By day, it is casual and sunny. By night, it switches into something more playful without losing its local feel.
Food, drinks, and art in Kloof Street
Kloof Street’s food scene is strong enough to build an entire day around, Time Out says.
Standouts for the publication were Kloof Konbini, which brings a sharp hit of Japanese street food to the neighbourhood, and Blondie for Mediterranean dishes served in a bright, open space that always feels in step with Cape Town’s warm weather.
Vadivelu adds depth with the bold, fragrant cooking of Southern India, and Kloof Street House continues to draw crowds with its glowing lights, lush décor and indulgent, dinner-party energy.
The drinks scene matches the food in personality.
According to the publication, Rick’s Café, Van Hunks, Asoka and One Park each offer their own blend of DJs, classic cocktails and long conversations that slide easily into the night. It is lively without tipping into chaos, which is part of the street’s charm.
Creativity also shapes the daytime mood as much as the dining does. AKJP Studio stands out for its unique blend of fashion, art, and coffee, all under one roof. Baikt Ceramics gives you the chance to sit at a wheel and shape your own piece of pottery, while the run of thrift and vintage stores along the street rewards anyone who likes the thrill of a good find.
Globally, the street that ranked as the coolest street in the world was Rua do Senado in Rio de Janeiro. Orange Street in Osaka followed in second place, with Rua do Bonjardim in Porto closing out the top three.
