More traffic chaos on Kaaimans Pass as truck catches fire

Traffic is still heavily backed up and stationary from Sedgefield towards the Astron circle in Wilderness after a logging truck caught fire on Kaimaans Pass on Wednesday.

Vehicles leaving George travelling towards Wilderness are also backed up to the N2 Junction

As at the time of publishing, a stop-and-go system is in place while the scene is being cleared.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and proceed with caution.

Not the first incident

This is the second major disruption to traffic to have affected that particular stretch of road this month.

Earlier in November, a video capturing a physical altercation between members of two tow truck companies at the scene of a crash on Kaaimans Pass went viral – drawing widespread condemnation.

In the footage, two men can be seen throwing punches near a crash site while emergency personnel attended to the injured.

The incident has reignited concern over long-standing rivalries between local towing operators, often marked by disputes over recovery jobs and alleged territorial competition.

Tension

Industry observers say such tensions have persisted for years, fuelled by professional jealousy and alleged pay-offs for exclusive access to accident scenes.

Following the incident, the organisation Live Traffic NPC issued a strong message to all tow truck companies, urging them to remember their duty of care.

“Fighting at crash scenes, disregarding law enforcement, and prioritising towing over the well-being of the injured is eroding public trust,” the statement read.

The group warned that continued misconduct could see insurance companies and motorists opt for alternative services, calling for a renewed focus on “dignity, professionalism, and prioritising lives over profit.”

Local authorities have yet to confirm whether any charges will be laid following the incident.

What happened?

Traffic on the N2 was backed up for kilometres following the crash on the Kaaimans Pass between Wilderness and George, where two trucks were involved in a head-on collision.

Motorists were urged to be patient, as there were no alternative routes available.

“Kaaimans Pass is closed to traffic in both directions and will remain closed until further notice. No estimated time of reopening is available at this stage, and no alternative routes are currently available. The public is urged to avoid the area and to exercise patience while emergency teams attend to the incident,” George Municipality Spokesperson, Debra Sauer, said at the time.

There were multiple reports of passengers having missed their flights from nearby George Airport.
