South Africa is gearing up for a hot summer. On Cape Town’s Muizenberg Beach, it’s about to become even hotter, thanks to an upcoming hot sauna installation.
Indeed, in less than two weeks, surfers and beachgoers alike will be able to relax, renew and sweat their stress away in a working sauna located right on the beach.
What’s more, it will be built inside one of the beach’s iconic, restored beach huts.
HOT SAUNA? MORE LIKE HUT SAUNA!
According to Cape Town ETC, the trial period for the Beach Hut Sauna will be officially launched on Monday, 1 December 2025.
Members of the public will be able to sweat it out inside a double beach hut. It will be fitted with high-quality sauna wood and fire-retardant materials.
Sauna price rates are managed by Hot Huts, a local mobile sauna service. They collaborated with the Beach Hut Trust and the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department to make this project possible.
The Beach Hut Trust will receive a share of the monthly revenue generated from the sauna. With it, they will be able to pay for the upkeep of the beach huts.
BRINGING HEALTH BENEFITS TO THE MUIZENBERG COMMUNITY
In addition to preserving the heritage of Muizie’s beach huts, this sauna also provides many health and wellness benefits.
Whether you’re a surfer who’s been riding the waves all morning or you’ve just been soaking up the sun, saunas are a great way to improve your blood circulation, relax your muscles and reduce stress.
“People are looking for accessible wellness experiences, and the City has been open to imaginative pilot projects that bring positive energy to public spaces,” said Angela Gorman, the chairwoman of the Beach Hut Trust, in a recent interview with the False Bay Echo.
Gorman added, “Saunas create [a] connection. People talk, reflect and meet others – often strangers – in a calm, restorative space. It’s a rare kind of community-builder and something new for Muizenberg.”
