While it sometimes seems like there’s some kind of method to the MAFS producers’ madness, Joe and Maeve were just one of the couples from season 10 that seemed criminally mismatched.
Joe was a retired party boy who had dedicated himself to fitness, but Maeve was very much still in her radgie era – make it make sense. Despite that, their relationship did continue to expand in the subsequent episodes, so maybe there was a rhyme and reason to the match.
Scratch that, because just a few weeks later and the two headed to splitsville, with Joe going on holiday (and sleeping with) Divarni’s on-screen wife, Julia-Ruth.
While there’s always the argument that couples have to work at the relationship to see what the experts are seeing, is that just a way of shifting the blame from the experts and onto the couples themselves? Joe certainly thinks so.

Joe has admitted to being frustrated over his match
During an appearance on The Tom Talks podcast, where he also revealed how the cast found out about the Julia-Ruth affair, Joe admitted to feeling a little frustrated over his match with Maeve.
Detailing the MAFS casting process, he recalled: “Married at First Sight, you’re supposedly matched by like psychologists. I say supposed. We’ll get into that. It’s like a six-month process of like matching you with a person. So it’s a long process.
“Six months before the show. So it’s a long drawn-out process where you have like loads of video calls about, you know, like psychoanalysis, all that sort of stuff.”

Here’s why he thinks he was matched with Maeve
But here’s where the issue comes in. Joe had left behind his party life, and was proper into his fitness, so he was left confused by being matched with Maeve.
“I made it clear that like the party lifestyle was behind me. I made that very clear. And I also made it clear that like health and fitness was a very essential part of my life,” he explained.
“Um, so for us to be matched together seemed a little bit questionable because obviously we might have had similar traits in terms of our personalities, maybe. But when you’ve got like literally two opposite like lifestyles there, how would that ever work in a marriage if you think about it logically?”
He said there were “a lot of us” who felt the same, and I can definitely think of a few people who were horribly mismatched.
With all that considered, Joe recons there was only one reason to match him to Maeve: The chaos.
“And I think the obvious answer is that we are matched to cause drama, basically,” he added.
