Authorities are investigating the cause of a crash in Paarl after a minibus taxi transporting high school learners overturned on Sonstraal Road, near the entrance to Nederburg Wine Estate.
According to the Drakenstein Municipality, the vehicle was carrying 15 learners en route to New Orleans Secondary School when it overturned.
Driver uninjured
Emergency responders from the municipality’s Public Safety Department arrived on the scene and confirmed that:
- Two learners sustained serious injuries
- Six learners were slightly injured
- The driver and six other learners appeared uninjured but were transported to hospital as a precaution
Paramedics from Western Cape EMS and private ambulance services treated and transported all occupants.
The minibus taxi wreckage has since been cleared from the roadway, and traffic has returned to normal.
In a brief statement, the municipality expressed concern for those affected: “Our thoughts are with the learners, their families and everyone affected by this incident.”
