Gauteng will face a dynamic mix of storms, cooler temperatures and intermittent rainfall as weather systems shift across central South Africa.
The South African Weather Service says conditions will remain unstable through throughout the day, with forecaster Mpho Rasimphi confirming that rain will affect parts of the province.
Isolated showers expected over the central regions
Rasimphi said the central interior continues to experience unstable moisture levels, leading to thunderstorms and scattered showers.
“We’re still expecting a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers stretching from Bethlehem all the way into Pietermaritzburg,” he explained, noting that the system affects Gauteng’s eastern edges as well.
He added that isolated rainfall persists in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, but moisture continues drifting southward, pushing storm activity toward the Free State and interior provinces.
Cool temperatures across Gauteng
The Gauteng province had cooler overnight temperatures.
“Temperature-wise for tonight, it is going to be cool over most of the country, with Johannesburg dropping down to 10,” Rasimphi said.
He said temperatures will rise modestly today, but Gauteng will not escape the cloudy and stormy conditions expected across the central interior.
Warnings for severe thunderstorms
Weather authorities have also kept severe thunderstorm alerts active for regions adjacent to Gauteng.
“We have a level 2 warning of severe thunderstorms, with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds and a large amount of small hail,” Rasimphi warned.
While Gauteng is not at the centre of the alert, spill-over effects remain possible.
