ANC shuts down rumours of early Cyril Ramaphosa exit

The African National Congress (ANC) has moved swiftly to quell reports of internal unrest, insisting that its top leadership – including President Cyril Ramaphosa – will remain in office until the party’s national conference in December 2027.

In a firm statement, the party emphasised that the National Executive Committee (NEC) elected in December 2022 “remains in office and will complete its mandate,” following claims that senior Eastern Cape members were circulating a letter calling for Ramaphosa’s removal and the installation of a national task team under former president Thabo Mbeki.

The ANC dismissed the reports as unverified, urging members to respect internal processes and avoid inflaming tensions.

‘There is no departure lounge in the NEC’

Addressing journalists after the NEC meeting at Germiston Council Chambers, acting party spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli told SABC News that there was “no departure lounge” inside the NEC and that the leadership would remain intact until the end of its term.

Cyril Ramaphosa’s closing remarks at the meeting were opened to the media – a rare move seen as a show of transparency.

The president, who celebrated his 73rd birthday on 17 November, acknowledged the speculation, but said he would resign only if instructed by the NEC.

Analysts dismiss resignation rumours

Political analyst Dr Frans Cronje downplayed the reports of an imminent resignation, saying that he does not believe Ramaphosa is preparing to step aside.

“I don’t think Ramaphosa is going to resign soon. I think he will stick around for another two years,” Cronje said.

Global scrutiny adds pressure

The rumours gained traction heading into the G20 Leaders’ Summit, to be held this weekend amid diplomatic strains and high-profile absences.

The Summit has placed additional global attention on South Africa’s leadership, coinciding with renewed calls from within the ANC for organisational renewal ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

Meanwhile, Cyril Ramaphosa received birthday wishes from both the Presidency and party colleagues, with brief messages highlighting his long political career and continued focus on government priorities.

Despite murmurs of dissent, the ANC’s official stance is clear: the president is staying put, and the NEC will serve out its mandate through 2027.
