Zimbabwean fugitive still on the run after Cosmo City shootout

For the second time this year, Zimbabwean fugitive Jabulani Moyo has managed to slip away from police, this time after a tense chase in Cosmo City, Johannesburg North.

The operation ended with one suspect dead and another arrested, but Moyo remains at large.

According to SAPS, officers from crime intelligence received information about suspects who were planning to commit a business robbery in Fairlands and Honeydew.

On Saturday afternoon, police spotted a grey Audi and a white VW Polo linked to the suspects.

“As police were approaching the cars, the suspects alighted and fired shots at the police, shootout ensued,” reads the police statement.

“Other suspects fled on foot while two suspects jumped into the VW Polo and sped off. Police gave chase until at Cosmo City where one suspect was fatally shot and the other suspect arrested.”

Officers recovered an AK-47, a pistol, and ammunition. But Moyo, known for his repeated escapes, vanished once again.

Neighbours in Cosmo City said the sound of gunfire left many shaken. “We heard several shots and saw police chasing the cars,” said Melody Makhubele. “It’s frightening to think he is still out there.”

Moyo is wanted for the murder of two police officers in Roodepoort and for escaping lawful custody in August.

Authorities say he was part of a gang planning robberies around Fairlands and Honeydew.

Moyo has repeatedly evaded capture, moving between Johannesburg suburbs and allegedly staying with criminal networks.

Police warn that he is armed and dangerous and have launched another manhunt.

The arrested suspect faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms, while the search continues for Moyo and his accomplices.
