Matric Rage: Safety tips every matriculant should know

In ten days, thousands of matriculants across South Africa will be writing their final exam papers. Then, after downing pen and paper, many of them will inevitably flock to different spots around the country for the ultimate school-end celebration – Matric Rage.

Many Matric Rage events take place on the coast, including Plettenberg Bay and Ballito in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, respectively.

In a year dominated by incidents of bullying, this is a time for students to wind down and relax. What’s more, it signifies the last chapter of their secondary education and the first chapter of their life as a young adult.

Needless to say, Matric Rage tends to raise parents’ stress levels to the nth degree, specifically where their children’s safety is concerned.

MATRIC RAGE: KEEP IN MIND THESE SAFETY TIPS

Although organisers have tightened safety and security measures at Matric Rage events in recent years, there are always risks, especially regarding partying and alcohol consumption.

So, if you’re a matriculant who’s planning to attend Rage this year, be sure to follow these safety tips:

1. SAFETY IN NUMBERS

Leaving and returning to your accommodation during Rage is a lot safer if you are travelling in a group. Having a friend or two at close hand, especially when you head out for the night (or day), is a good way to deter potential threats. They can also assist if anything gets out of hand.

2. WATCH YOUR DRINKS

Unattended beverages are susceptible to being spiked. As such, never leave these unattended. By the same token, you should never accept drinks from strangers.

3. SECURE YOUR VALUABLES

Jewellery, small electronics and other valuables should be locked away in a drawer or, if you’re in a hotel, in your room’s safe.

4. KEEP FOLKS INFORMED OF YOUR WHEREABOUTS

Whether you’re heading down to a late-night performance or for an afternoon swim on the beach, tell your friends where you’re going. That way, they can raise the alarm if you don’t return or check in as planned.

5. BE VIGILANT

This may or may not be the first time you’ve been far away from home. Regardless, things can get pretty fast-paced at Rage. For that reason, you should always be wary of your surroundings, be it on the dancefloor or outside the party venue.

If you feel uncomfortable at any point, don’t be afraid to walk away or speak to a security or police officer.

TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN BEFORE THEY GO TO MATRIC RAGE

While some view Matric Rage as a rite of passage, a majority of parents fear the repercussions of the freedoms that these events entail.

That’s why it’s important to sit down with your children beforehand. In doing so, you can both unpack your fears and expectations.

Per Plett Rage’s official website:

We strongly encourage all parents to begin open and honest dialogues with their children around partying responsibly. By discussing topics such as alcohol consumption openly, you can help prepare your child to behave responsibly and take care of themselves during their time with us.

At the end of the day, your kids deserve to celebrate the end of their high school careers on a high note. Ultimately, however, it’s up to them to do so safely and sensibly.
