About the IEC Outreach Internship
The IEC is a constitutional institution mandated to manage free and fair elections across the country. Through this internship, successful candidates will gain practical experience in:
- Civic and democracy education
- Voter registration initiatives
- Media and communication support
- Community outreach programmes
- Electoral operations
- Research and reporting
- General office administration
The internship is supervised by the Assistant Manager: Outreach.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Civic and Democracy Education
- Support civic education and voter registration projects across the province.
- Assist with youth-focused outreach activities.
- Help coordinate community meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagements.
- Collect and collate reports for provincial outreach initiatives.
Communication
- Assist with the drafting and implementation of the provincial communication plan.
- Update and maintain a database of media contacts.
- Assist in preparing media statements, monitoring media enquiries, and supporting media briefings.
Research
- Conduct research related to electoral processes and regional socio-economic conditions.
- Analyse data and prepare written reports.
- Research new approaches for civic education and youth engagement.
- Propose topics for provincial thought leadership seminars.
Finance and Administration
- Provide support with finance documentation and general office administration.
- Assist with HR-related administrative tasks for permanent, temporary, and electoral staff.
General Office Support
- Draft reports, minutes, presentations, and written proposals.
- Handle routine administrative tasks and stakeholder enquiries.
- Assist with meetings, filing systems, project tasks, and document distribution.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Completed Grade 12.
- A completed three-year National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Public Management, Humanities, Communication/Journalism, Political Studies, Law or related fields.
- Must be a registered voter.
- Must be 35 years of age or younger.
- Must not have worked in the field of study or previously completed an internship.
- Understanding of the Western Cape region, including languages and socio-economic landscape.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good research ability and data analysis skills.
- Computer literacy with strong MS Office skills, including Excel.
- Must be willing to work long hours and travel extensively when required.
- Ability to work under pressure and in a team environment.
