Table Mountain ‘Take a Hike Day’ POSTPONED due to weather

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), in partnership with Table Mountain National Park, has postponed its annual Take a Hike Day to Monday, 17 November.

This follows forecasts of adverse weather conditions on the original date, Saturday, 15 November.

Organisers said the decision was made to prioritise participant safety, particularly amid expected high winds later in the day.

Revised Schedule for Hikers

Check-in for pre-registered hikers will now take place between 06:00 and 08:00, and participants aiming to take part in the popular litter hand-in at the Top Station must do so by 14:00.

The earlier finish is intended to avoid the strong winds forecast for the afternoon.

“Safety is always our top priority,” said Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC.

“We appreciate everyone’s understanding and enthusiasm and look forward to welcoming our hikers on Monday for a meaningful morning on the mountain.”

Fifth Year of a Growing Eco Initiative

Now in its fifth year, Take a Hike Day has become a cornerstone of TMACC’s sustainability calendar.

The event encourages participants to hike, explore, and remove litter from the mountain’s trails – an initiative that has grown into a family-friendly, community-driven effort to preserve one of South Africa’s most beloved natural landmarks.

All existing registrations remain valid for the new date, and sign-ups are still open via the official registration link.

Park Officials Welcome the Move

Table Mountain National Park Manager Megan Taplin welcomed the rescheduling, emphasising the importance of caution in large outdoor events.

“It’s heartening to see so many people coming together to make a difference for the environment. Take a Hike Day captures the spirit of collective care that defines Cape Town’s relationship with this mountain,” she said.

With safety secured and enthusiasm undimmed, hundreds of Capetonians are still expected to take part in next week’s environmental clean-up hike.
