KwaZulu-Natal enters the weekend under warm and somewhat humid conditions, especially along the East Coast, but residents should brace for the weekend’s rainfall.
Forecaster Mduduzi Mthembu explained, “We are seeing very warm weather conditions along the East Coast, with maximums around 24°.”
Interior areas such as Pietermaritzburg will also remain mild, but strengthening winds and building cloud cover signal a shift ahead of the weekend’s rainfall.
Cold front pushes heavy rain towards the coast
As the cold front moves through, KwaZulu-Natal will face increasing chances of thundershowers on Saturday and heavier rainfall on Sunday. Areas north of Durban and those near the escarpment are likely to experience the most intense activity.
Mthembu highlighted, “Eastern showers are expected, and this is linked to the passing cold front moving across the country.”
Coastal communities are urged to monitor alerts due to the potential for sudden downpours and rapidly changing conditions.
Localised flooding possible on Sunday
Sunday is expected to be the wettest day, with widespread showers and thunderstorms intensifying. The moisture-rich atmosphere over the province increases the chances of flash flooding, particularly in flood-prone townships and informal settlements.
Zonke added, “Heavy rainfall is in the forecast on Sunday over the eastern provinces with localised flooding expected.”
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, avoid riverbanks, and plan travel carefully.
