Wet and stormy conditions expected in Gauteng this weekend

Gauteng heads into the weekend under warm and pleasant weather, but forecasters warn that the province is likely to see a noticeable shift as a cold front moves across South Africa. Johannesburg is expected to enjoy a comfortable day today, with temperatures reaching 25°C, while Pretoria is forecast to peak at 27°C.

Forecaster Mduduzi Mthembu noted that, “We are expecting a lovely day for Johannesburg at 25°, and similar conditions over Pretoria.”

While Gauteng remains relatively stable at first, the weekend’s second half brings more active weather systems. Temperatures will remain warm during the early hours before cloud cover and rainfall begin to push in from the east.

Cold front to bring widespread thundershowers in Gauteng

The South African Weather Service warns of a widespread chance of thundershowers across Gauteng, the Free State and North West as the cold front advances inland. These conditions will intensify Saturday overnight into Sunday.

According to Mthembu, “There is a widespread chance of thundershowers, and this is a result of a passing cold front.”

Residents in the eastern parts of the province should expect heavy cloud build-up by Saturday afternoon, accompanied by gusty winds and localised downpours.

Sunday flooding risk across the Highveld

Sunday brings a greater threat as heavy rainfall spreads across eastern provinces, especially Mpumalanga and Limpopo’s Highveld areas. Localised flooding remains possible in low-lying regions.

Mthembu explained, “Even more heavy rainfall is in the forecast on Sunday, especially over the Highveld of Mpumalanga, with localised flooding expected.”

Motorists travelling across Gauteng’s highways are urged to exercise caution, particularly in the afternoon when storm activity is most likely.
