World Kindness Day: Best ways to spread kindness in SA

Today is 13 November 2025, which marks World Kindness Day. As the name suggests, it’s a time for you and other folks to show empathy and goodwill, overall making a positive impact on somebody else’s life.

In South Africa, where there are plenty of goings-on that border on grim or worrying, kindness is needed now more than ever. And honestly, a thoughtful gesture as small as a smile is nothing to be shunned at in Mzansi.

If you’re looking to find ways to spread a little kindness today in SA today, we’ve got you covered with a couple of simple yet inspiring ideas!

SPREAD KINDNESS IN SIX DIFFERENT WAYS

To celebrate World Kindness Day, you can try the following:

1. SHOW APPRECIATION

Let the people in your life know how much you appreciate them. This can take any form, from complimenting them to thanking them.

For example, you can write a note (yes, a handwritten one) to your best friend. In it, you can express how much you treasure their friendship, how their presence lifts your spirits, and so on.

2. BE POLITE

Treat others as you want to be treated, as the adage goes.

As such, whether it’s strangers on the streets or it’s a waiter, cashier, petrol station attendant or gardener, being polite and respectful in your actions and speech makes all the difference. In fact, it may just make the other person’s day a bit brighter.

3. LEND A HAND

Offer to help with tasks at home or within your neighbourhood. This could range from carrying out a chore (dishwashing, cooking, etc.) to helping your elderly neighbour carry their groceries from their car indoors.

No matter how big or small these tasks are, they can help strengthen your relationships and foster a sense of community.

4. MAKE A DONATION

There are many individuals and charitable causes in South Africa who are in need of assistance. That’s why you should consider donating.

You don’t necessarily have to donate money (although every cent, even if it’s just a handful, certainly does help). You can also donate food, pet food, clothing, toys and other items that can be put to good use by others.

5. BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Volunteering at a pet shelter, an old-age home, a literacy programme or for a charity can be a fulfilling endeavour. After all, you’re making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

What’s more, by giving back to the community, you get to meet new people, form long-lasting friendships, build up your self-confidence and boost your soft skills.

6. BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Being kind to others starts by being kind to yourself. Life can be hectic and full of challenges, which can take a huge toll on both your physical and mental well-being.

As such, be sure to show yourself some self-love. Whether it’s reading a book, eating chocolate, window-shopping or relaxing in a bubble bath, don’t be afraid to do something just because it makes you happy. You deserve it.

SPREAD KINDNESS EVERY DAY

Kindness shouldn’t have to be a luxury. In today’s landscape, it’s practically a necessity. What’s more, it needs to be given freely without expecting something in return.

Again, you don’t have to go all out when spreading kindness. A smile or a polite word is just as powerfully positive and positively powerful.

So long as you practise kindness wherever you can beyond this particular holiday, the world will start to look less grim and more merry.
