The Mother City is going paperless. From 31 December 2025, residents will no longer receive municipal paper bills in the post.
Read on to find out how you can ensure that your account doesn’t disappear at the same time.
200 000 customer accounts have not made the digital switch
From 1 January 2026, the City will stop sending printed municipal accounts and will move entirely from paper to email billing.
According to the City, almost 517 000 Capetonians have already registered for eBilling, but another 200 000 households still need to sign up before the end of the year.
“We’re urging all customers to register as soon as possible, as the City will stop sending accounts by post after 31 December 2025,” said the City’s Mayco Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi,
“The City is sending direct communication to those who we still need to assist to make the switch.”
The move forms part of the City’s push to improve efficiency, cut costs, and reduce paper waste. It also protects customers from postal delays, ensuring accounts arrive on time each month.
If you haven’t switched yet, here are three simple steps to keep your account:
Email: Send your account number, cellphone number, and email address to Revenue.Eservices@capetown.gov.za
SMS: Text the same details to 31223
Call: If you don’t have an email account, phone 0860 103 089 or visit your nearest Customer Interaction Centre
Why the City is going digital:
- Faster access: eBilling accounts arrive instantly via email.
- Better tracking: Easier to monitor payments and keep digital records.
- Proof of residence: Electronic bills are valid for official purposes.
- Eco-friendly: Less paper means reduced waste.
- Cost saving: Cuts out printing and postal delivery expenses.
“Deadlines often come up faster than expected, so we encourage residents to act now,” added Mbandezi.
“It’s a quick and easy process that ensures your account is delivered straight to your inbox.”
