South Africa is getting a front-row seat to one of LEGO’s most impressive creations yet – a life-size replica of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance car, made from nearly 193 000 LEGO bricks.
Unveiled this week at the Mercedes-Benz Experience Centre at Zwartkops Raceway, the model is a stunning piece of engineering and creativity, measuring 5.1 metres long and 2.2 metres wide, and weighing in at 913 kilograms – slightly heavier than the real Formula 1 car it’s based on.
The LEGO sculpture was built from 192 937 individual pieces and took a team of expert builders eight hours to assemble.
Every detail has been faithfully recreated, right down to the sponsors’ logos – which have been constructed using LEGO bricks instead of stickers. This gives the car a unique, blocky texture that stays true to the brand’s iconic style.
According to Valery Kasimov, LEGO South Africa’s new country manager, the reveal is part of the company’s mission to “celebrate creativity and innovation through play.”
He hinted that South Africa could expect more large-scale LEGO projects in the future.
“This collaboration between LEGO South Africa and Mercedes-Benz is built on shared values of precision, performance, and excellence,” added Claudius Steinhoff, Executive Director MBC and Co-CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa.
“The LEGO Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 car celebrates our achievements at the pinnacle of motorsport and reflects the innovation, craftsmanship, and passion that unite both brands.”
The life-sized LEGO car will now tour South Africa, giving fans in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town a chance to see it in person – along with an interactive LEGO pop-up experience.
Visitors can test their reflexes like real F1 drivers, race their own LEGO cars in downhill challenges, and shop exclusive sets at the mobile LEGO store.
