It’s that time of year again, folks: the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is hosting its annual “Take a Hike Day” initiative this weekend.
Just like in previous years, the fifth annual edition of this conservation initiative – in collaboration with SANParks – will see members of the public coming together to hike up Table Mountain in Cape Town, picking up and disposing of litter as they do so.
Here’s everything you need to know about the event:
‘TAKE A HIKE DAY’: TIME AND DATE
Depending on the weather conditions, the event is scheduled to begin at 6:00 this Saturday, 15 November 2025. Alternatively, it may be moved to Sunday, 16 November 2025.
Participants will gather at the starting points of three popular hiking routes: Platteklip Gorge Trail, Kloof Corner and Contour Path. TMACC strongly recommends that Contour Path is for experienced hikers only.
Check-in for pre-registered participants will be open from 6:00 to 10:00.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Once you’ve checked in, you will receive a bin bag, water and a wristband. Then, it’s onto the hike.
As you traverse your chosen route, you can pick up any litter that you come across and deposit it into your bin bag.
After completing your hike and rubbish-collecting, you can hand in your bag at the Twelve Apostles Terrace, just below the Shop at the Top and TEN67 Eatery. In exchange, you will receive a snack pack and a free ride down the mountain in the cable car.
Hand-ins will conclude at 17:00.
TAKE A HIKE FOR CONSERVATION
According to Cape Town ETC, over 300 hikers took part in last year’s event. Ultimately, they collected nearly 60 kilograms of litter during their hikes on Table Mountain.
Megan Taplin, Park Manager at Table Mountain National Park, says that the overall initiative is “a wonderful example of how collaboration between SANParks, TMACC and the community can make a meaningful difference, reminding us that conservation works best when everyone plays their part.”
So, whether you’re a hiker, a nature enthusiast or you simply want to make a difference, “Take a Hike Day” is the perfect way for you to get closer to Mother Nature and keep her pristine.
Be sure to bring your own gloves and litter-pickers. You’re also advised to wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, including a hat and hiking shoes. Remember to apply sunscreen and bring ample water to keep you hydrated in the heat.
