Wits University students took to the streets on Monday evening to demonstrate against the scourge of gender-based violence.
This comes after allegations of rape surfaced involving a University Student Representative Council (SRC) member and a student.
Musawenkosi Mavuso is accused of allegedly raping a fellow student.
The Wits SRC has distanced itself from Mavuso in a statement released on Tuesday, citing that the student body will not be complicit in any act that undermines the safety, dignity, and justice of the student community.
“Due to the overwhelming evidence brought forward, we call for the university to immediately expel Musawenkosi Mavuso and ensure they face legal consequences for their actions,” the student body said.
The Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command has expressed deep disturbance over the matter and called for the immediate suspension of Musawenkosi Mavuso from the higher learning institution, who is the SRC Officer for Innovation and Community Development, pending a full investigation.
“The EFF Youth Command (EFFYC) at the University of the Witwatersrand has confirmed reports of an alleged rape incident involving one of its members, who is also a sitting member of the Student Representative Council (SRC),” said the EFFYC.
Furthermore, it was revealed that Mavuso was previously suspended from the EFFYC over similar allegations of sexual assault.
“This highlights the ongoing concerns about gender-based violence (GBV) on South African campuses. Families and students across the country, where GBV remains a pervasive issue affecting one in three women, are calling for swift justice and stronger protections to ensure safe learning environments,” said the EFFYC.
Meanwhile, the SRC has declared its full support for the march that is set to take place at the education campus on Tuesday.
“We refuse to be intimidated by the Central Protection Services; we therefore condemn all filming of students by CPS during the demonstration.”
