  • Motorists in Johannesburg should prepare for significant traffic disruption this Saturday, 15 November, from 09:00 to 13:00 due to a joint security operation.
  • The rolling road closures affect major routes including the N1, M1, N12, and key urban arteries like Rivonia Road and Jan Smuts Avenue.
  • Authorities urge drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use designated alternative routes to avoid the high-security zones ahead of the G20 Summit.

Motorists in the City of Johannesburg are being advised to expect significant traffic delays and temporary road closures this Saturday, 15 November 2025, due to a major joint traffic operation ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The coordinated operation, involving the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and the South Africa Police Service (SAPS), will implement rolling road closures across key routes between 09:00 and 13:00.

Key areas affected

The high-security operation will specifically target Johannesburg and its surrounding road networks, focusing on facilitating traffic law enforcement and security compliance.

Major highways and regional routes affected include:

  • N1
  • M1
  • N12

Urban arteries and local roads that will see closures and restrictions include:

  • Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, Kathrine Street
  • Oxford Road, Glenhove Road, Jan Smuts Avenue
  • Hendrick Potgieter Road, Rand Show Road, Nasrec Road, and the Golden Highway (Nasrec)
  • Various streets in the Sandton area, such as 5th Street, Maude Street, and Daisy Street.

Travel advice for motorists

Authorities are strongly urging residents and commuters to plan journeys in advance and allow for extra travel time during the four-hour operational window. The measures are essential for enhancing public safety and managing congestion.

Recommended alternative routes include:

  • Roodepoort Area: Use Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet Road, and Ontdekkers Road instead of Hendrick Potgieter Road.
  • Fourways Area: Consider Main Road, Cedar Road, and Witkoppen Road.
  • Sandton/Rosebank/Parktown: Parallel side streets such as Corlett Drive, Sandton Drive, and 11th Avenue are suggested.
  • Southern Johannesburg: Alternatives include Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Soweto Highway, and the N17.

Traffic officers and clear signage will be deployed to guide road users, and the operation confirms that emergency and essential services access will be prioritised at all times.
