What to expect: SASSA Child Support Grants for December 2025

The good news is it’s a typical four-week cycle for SASSA Child Support Grants for December 2025. That means that the R560 grant, going to more than 13-million needy families, will be disbursed on Thursday 4 December 2025. However, beyond the nuts and bolts of the stipend, there is growing pressure on the agency to readdress the amount paid per child.

Advocacy groups are lobbying for SASSA Child Support Grants for December 2025 to be increased to at least the food poverty line of R790. However, researchers from the Economic Justice and Dignity group believe the nutritional needs of a young child actually costs anywhere between R826 – R1 085, age dependent.

Nevertheless, comments made by the deputy minister of Social Development recently are a harbinger of bad news for future grant increases. Speaking to protesters at parliament last week, Deputy Minister Ganief Hendricks explained that the South African Social Security Agency was coming under severe financial pressure. “Given substantial pressure on the fiscus, the government has had to make difficult decisions to bring public finances back under control,” said Hendricks.

Furthermore, he emphasised that SASSA does not determine the grant amounts, it merely distributes the money. “Social grant amounts are based on legislative and policy frameworks and fiscal sustainability. There are constant consultations between the Department of Social Development, National Treasury and other ministries to come to these figures,” the deputy minister insisted.

HOW TO APPLY FOR CHILD SUPPORT

Paid more than 13 million families with dependents under the age of 18, the SASSA Child Support Grant is the most expensive for the government. Image: File

So, what do you do if you want to apply for SASSA Child Support Grants for December 2025? Well, the grant is only paid to one parent per child. And beneficiaries cannot receive more than one SASSA grant at a time (like Old Age or Disability). Moreover, eligible parents must prove to the agency that their means (income) is less than R5 600 per month if single. Or R11 191 per month if married. There is no asset portion for this childcare grant.

Interestingly, since the SASSA Child Support Grant was introduced back in 1998, the number of children living below the food poverty line has decreased. From 53% in 2003 to a low of 33% in 2019. But out of 13-million SASSA Child Support Grants for December 2025 paid, 7.8-million of those children still live below the food poverty line, 40.6%. This figure is too high.

Factoring in consumer inflation and population increase, it’s hard to tell how SASSA will reduce its budget by R14 billion next year. Image: File

Of course, nearly doubling the child grant would be impossible with SASSA’s looming budget decrease in 2026/27. But that’s also good reason for any parents with a child under the age of 18 to apply for SASSA Child Support Grants for December 2025 before it gets even harder to qualify.

If you meet the income requirements, all you need is the following means to make an appointment:

  • Valid identity documents (IDs) of you, your child and spouse (if married).
  • Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
  • Official birth certificate and ID of the child you’re applying for.
